Subin Baek and Sangyeob Lee (South Korea) | Physical training through Ganggangsullae
5 April 2025 | 10:00 – 11:00 | Orlí Theatre, 6th floor, Rehearsal Room
Gang-gang-sullae is a traditional folk game played under the moon on the Korean holiday of Chuseok. It is also an important intangible cultural heritage. The basic form is singing in a circle while holding hands, combining various games.
The women gather in the courtyard, holding hands and singing and dancing in a circle. A woman with a good voice and musical talent stands at the front and shouts ‘Ganggangsullae’, whereupon the others respond ‘Ganggangsullae’.
Ganggangsullae was a game designed for women. The lyrics of the songs, which are closely related to the lives of women, convey the feelings of longing, loneliness and joy experienced by women of that time.
K-Art uses this dance as a form of physical training for actors, and choreography based on Ganggangsullae was also used in the production of The Nape.
