April 2, 2025 | 16:00 – 18:00
JAMU Faculty of Arts, Room 202
“Budapest. Book cover showing two boys holding hands. The bookstore does not cover the title with foil and sells it in the young adult section. The result? A fine of HUF 12 million, approximately CZK 760 000.” – Olga Richterová 2023, médium.cz

“The purges in Slovak culture continue. Another director has been dismissed without giving a reason.” – Ivan Vilček 2024, novinky.cz
“Poles protested against art censorship by eating bananas, and the management of the national museum temporarily gave in to the protest.” – Marek Martinovský 2019, seznamzpravy.cz
These and many other reports from the V4 countries have appeared in the media in recent years. Censorship of textbooks and children’s literature, dismissal of representatives of cultural institutions, cancellation of “inappropriate” plays and exhibitions. Where is the line between protecting values and suppressing artistic freedom? How does the current political situation affect freedom of speech and artistic expression?
Come and join the debate, where we will discuss the censorship of art in the Visegrad Four countries in the context of historical developments, the current geopolitical situation and the challenges faced by people in culture. Don’t miss the lecture and discussion that will reveal what pressures and waves are shaping the cultural landscape of Central Europe.
